14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The volcano goddess "Pele" wakes up.

While on assignment for Oakley, we decided to take a lava tour last minute. It was the first time in four years where the lava met the ocean. We went on a boat and got close to the action. "Pele" is known to be the goddess of fire in Hawaii. There have been stories told of people seeing "Pele" in the lava. This shot captured "Pele" showing her presence. One in a million shot taken on a last minute excursion.
