19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
The wild eyes

On the cold winter’s day, a young Japanese monkey independent from its mother, gave me a strong and sharp glance through the icicles in the Jigokudani Monkey Park. Due to the habit of Japanese monkeys, if it's male monkey, he will leave the group in a first few years. On the other hand, if it is female monkey, she spends their lives in a group. Whether it's male or female, young monkeys have to learn the way to live life in the harshness of nature such as heavy cold and snowfall while living in a group.
