15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
There Once Was Water

My wife and I visit the Salton Sea every February, and have been sadly amazed at how the water level has fallen year to year. The bases of these trees were once fully submerged, and now there is no water nearby. They seem to be skeletons in a dry desert.
