theyyam dancer

theyyam is a centuries old ritual in remote villiages in north kerala, india which is not generally accessable to the public. the make up takes hours and the colours are from trees and leaves, flowers etc. there are 400 different theyyams and each has a different make up.. the photo shows the dancer with his dress made from palm leaves and fire which is present in some form or other. the head gear is made from locally available products and represents the region. the dress represents the gods and after the ritual villiagers approach the theyyam to see spiritual advice.
