19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
This is a flight "stack" of Least Sandpipers showing three different wing positions.

As I was sitting on a gravel bar along a river in camouflage, a large flock of Least Sandpipers came shooting by, heading upstream. I was lucky that these three, because of their close proximity, were all in focus as I swung the tripod, the dark background of the opposite river bank made for great contrast to pop the details of the flight feathers, and I was ecstatic that the three birds were in a seemingly progressive stage of wing positioning showing both ventral and dorsal view of their wings.
