20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World

This Red-headed Woodpecker, an extremely rare bird in New England, was spending time darting from tree to tree gathering food. After getting his food, he poked holes in the side of a tree and stuffed the hole with his food, to be eaten later in the Winter.
