14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Sustainable Travel
Threat

One of goals of this project was to locate the penguins and to see if there were any egg in the burrows. We would also check if the eggs were successfully incubated to become chicks. All this information were recorded and would be used to understand the habitat of these penguins. The survival of these eggs depending on a lot of external factors including weather, survival of their parents and their predators. Armadillos was one of such external threats. They would steal the eggs if the penguins were off guard. This photo captured an armadillo searching for eggs from one burrow to another. My travel and involvement of this project helps the scientists to understand the environment that Magellanic penguins need to thrive, which, in turn, will help the local community to design appropriate measures to protect the environment.
