Three male longhorn bees sleeping on a brittle bush flower stem

In early summer male longhorn bees isolate from the females and sleep in large aggregations. These three, along with a few hundred other males, were sleeping on a brittle bush flower stem in my front yard. Note how they use their jaws to clamp on to the stem, holding them solid even in high winds and monsoon rain storms! I love photographing bees and in previous years travelled over 100 miles to gain access to a sleeping mass. You cant imagine my response when out of the blue i found hundreds of the same longhorn bees in my front yard. They have returned for the past few years.
