20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Through a Croc's Eye

I had visited this location the previous summer and photographed a few crocodiles. Given the nature of the subject, most photographers focus on wide-angle shots. But crocodiles also have a unique feature known as a nictitating membrane, which protects their eyes underwater, and I sought to capture it using a macro lens with a +6 diopter.
