19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Through My Eyes

This photo was taken on the first day that I wore my natural hair to school. I took the picture of myself because I was finally happy to be completely in my own skin in a public place. The name "Through My Eyes" comes from my perspective as an African American girl in a place where I don't see a lot of people like me. The photo shows my right eye surrounded by my afro. Though my afro engulfs the photo in darkness, it has engulfed my life in acceptance and pride.
