16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Today, beauty. Tomorrow, destruction.

On a clear day such as this one, Mayon Volcano's majesty overshadows its ability to cause destruction. Located in the province of Albay in the Philippines, Mayon Volcano is an active stratovolcano in the Bicol Region of the country. Known for having a "perfect" cone, it is both a blessing and a burden to the province. A blessing because it brings tourists from all over the world and provides healthy volcanic soil for the province's agricultural products. A burden because in every eruption, it affects the economy of the entire region.
