17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Together in the Desert

I wanted to capture the perseverance of desert elephants. Desert elephants inhabit a dry region of western Namibia. They live with little food and water and depend on ephemeral rivers for survival. I captured these males embracing each other to show how strongly elephants rely on each other to survive. Desert elephants live in large groups and rely on each others knowledge to find food and water.
