22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Tonle Sap Fisherman

We were traveling via river form Kompong Khleang to Tonle Sap, the largest lake in Southeast Asia. Kompong Khleang is a fishing village near Tonle Sap lake which sits on dry land alongside a river in the dry season (our visit was in the dry season) and is turned into a floating city when the lake comes to engulf it in the wet season. Fishing is the life support for the community of 10,000 which continues on the river and the lake during both seasons.
