Torre del Espolón, Lorca Castle

The Espolón Tower was built in 1244 to symbolise the power of the castilian crown. Located at the western side of the Castillo de Lorca (Lorca Castle) in the province of Murcia, Spain. The Torre del Espolón (Spur Tower) was constructed by order of Alfonso X King of Spain. The monument consists of a 13 meters quadrangular plant divided in two floors covered by a brick ribbed vault. The tower was constructed for defence purposes and the interior thereof was illuminated by means of loopholes. The tower has remained standing even after the earthquake on 11th May 2011. Which caused major damage to the city, claiming lives and leaving it's mark on the tower forever.
