During the 4-hour climb to the rim of the Erta Ale volcano, our tour group was accompanied by several local guides and guards. Most of the guides come from the rural villages throughout the Afar Region. This young guide-in-training joined our caravan at the last town before a long off-road journey to base camp of the volcano.
