Tourists and American flags encircling the Washington Monument
Hundreds of thousands of people visit the Washington Monument each year. For many Americans, it's practically a pilgrimage, paying homage to the Founding Fathers and all the leaders who came after them. The flags around the monument stand as symbols of pride and history, proclaiming to the world that this is a fully American scene. They may be fraying at the edges, but still they fly.
