22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
Traces of Wings

Japanese conservation efforts made it possible that the population of red-crowned cranes wich once was believed extinct, reached a viable number of roughly 1500 individuals again. At winter feeding stations designed to support the animals through the harsh winter season, one can regularly observe new groups joining in and leaving again, providing an ideal opportunity for experimenting with long exposure photography.
