14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Traditional enemies--a Sikh and a Muslim--ignore tradition.
The turbaned Sikh gentleman, Bicky Singh (no relation to me) hosts an annual dinner for Chapman University's foreign students, mainly from India. He invited his friend Essraa Nawar, who is from Egypt and as you can see, wears the hijab. Traditionally, for a variety of "reasons" Muslims and Sikhs don't mix, and I've always been vigilant when I see Bicky and Essraa together, for just the right moment to click an unposed "natural" portrait. Here it is.
