20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Tree frame
When visiting the Grand Canyon the sky was nearly black. It was windy and there was no light at all. Just before the sunset the clouds opend up a bit and the sun shined into the canyon. The tree framing the picture would probably only be ordinary without the dramatic light that created the contrast between the colorful rocks and the dark sky.
