13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Tree-laxation
Hidden in the 250,000 acres that make up Francis Marion National Forest are some immensely large trees. Some Live Oaks boast horizontal limbs that are more than 60 feet long and thicker than most other trees! Such limbs provide a great spot sit back and relax. While my buddies were visiting me in the forest we spent an afternoon in these giant trees climbing around, observing wildlife and enjoying each others company. This is a shot of my friend Hunter Bell amongst ferns growing 30 feet off the ground.
