Tumbe Joe, a Mondomil Local

Tumbe Joe Would you have an idea of how old you are? “No I don’t, but I do know that I was a young man when the missionaries first came 1954, and I was a teenager during the war (1944)”. (Which would probably put Tumbe in his 90s) “There was a lot of tribal fighting during those days, tribes would join forces to attack us back then. Then after many years the missionaries came and showed us a peaceful way of life that didn’t involve so much fighting. Do you have any children? Yes I have a daughter, but she hasn’t given me any grandchildren though, and she lives far from here”. “I live on my own, I also have my own kaukau (sweet potato) garden, i never went to school but I was taught to read the bible in Tok Pisin too”. I saw that Tumbe took pride in his independence and his ability to carry out his village obligations.
