Twin Caimans on Mother's Back, Indio Maiz, Nicaragua

Two caimans sit on their mother's back while one makes curious eye contact with the photographer's cyclops lens. These caimans are residents of Nicaragua's Indio Maiz Reserve, one of Central America's most biodiverse and most imperiled preserved forests. Threatened by encroaching palm oil plantations, subsistence farmers displaced by an impending interoceanic canal, and a government that continues to turn a blind eye, the Indio Maiz and all the species it gives home to may be gone within the decade.
