17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Two of a Kinda

When you look a Humpback Whale in the eye, it looks back into you. It's sentience & conscious are clear. It is an otherworldly experience to share the ocean with these gentle colossal animals. The sheer magnitude of the animal is lost on you until see it in person. I was lucky enough to spend several months working with the Humpback Whales of Tonga. The top whale swimming destination in the world, it offers interactions you can't find anywhere else on earth. One of the first countries in the world to outlaw whaling, Tonga has been a flagship of whale & marine conservation. The recovering number of these mammals gives hope to the rest of ocean, if we can take action & make a change.
