19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Two Rupees Girl

Spent two Years capturing ordinary beauty around one of the biggest slums in Pakistan. These kids, whose names are same like ours, beautiful and bright minds but they are bound to live in these slums due to the unbalanced society. Dhaani in both Urdu and Hindi is that person to whom the debt is owed. We as a society owe too much to these intelligent kids, who are actually our future. Girl is wearing a two rupee coin along with an amulet in her neck. Perhaps to keep her safe from all evils and to mark her with identification, if needed in the future. Perhaps living on streets isn’t that easy the way we all think.
