17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Under the rain

Every year, thousands of birds nest on the islands and cliffs of Scotland. One of the most anticipated species is the Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica). These colorful and funny birds arrive in mid-May to reunite with their partners and raise the chickens, and return to leave in mid-August to face long months offshore, in the cold seas of the North.
