20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Unnamed

On arrival to a known FAD (Fish Aggregating Device) we were welcomed by silky sharks; these sharks naturally aggregate under such devices. In addition to the sharks, thousands of jellies were present. Instead of leaving and avoiding the jellies, I hopped in to gain some rare imagery of the sharks swimming amongst them. It’s estimated over 150 million people are stung by jellies each year, with over 100 injuries becoming fatal. Sharks however have significantly lower injury rates, typically under 80, with death records of an average of seven each year. While capturing photographs of my beloved silky sharks I was being stung continuously. Fortunately, I knew I wasn’t allergic so persevered with the stings to capture the rare shots you view today. I of course do not recommend this, especially if you are unaware of your tolerance to jelly stings.
