18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Untitled

I have spent the past two years working on photographic projects that show the lifestyle of minorities in different cultures. The newsstands around New York City caught my attention because of their overloaded structure with products such as snacks, electronics, and magazines. The excessive amount of advertisement and material goods in contrast with the simplicity of the vendor were a peculiar characteristic which I wanted to investigate and document. In order to capture this message, I visited different newsstands around the city and interesting stores to take pictures of vendors. Sometimes I asked for permission, some were posed, but for most part I was photographing as a voyeur and observer. This photo was taken during a visit to Mr. Charles, a locksmith who owns a peculiar store.
