13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Uprooted in Yellowstone

Everything is magical in Yellowstone National Park. Tree roots are no exception. This particular root system was fantastic to photograph due to its tangled arms and marbled coloration. I came upon this piece of art as I walked the trail leading to the painted pots. Nestled between evergreens and an otherwise sparse landscape (thanks in part to the volatile earth beneath it), the quiet landscape offered many photographic opportunities.
