urban oasis

In this moment, I captured a flock of flamingos spread across the landscape, with the buildings in the background symbolizing the growing cityscape. Ras Al Khor, meaning "Cape of the Creek" in Arabic, is one of the world’s most unique urban protected areas. Situated at the end of Dubai Creek, it is home to over 25,000 migratory birds, including 201 species, every winter. The wetland hosts diverse ecosystems like salt flats, mangroves, and lagoons. Despite being surrounded by urban development, it plays a vital role in biodiversity conservation, filtering water, storing greenhouse gases, and maintaining ecological balance. However, rapid urbanization poses challenges to this fragile ecosystem. While steps have been taken to protect it, like fencing and bird hides, its future amidst a growing metropolis remains uncertain.
