22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Urban Wildlife

Macaques have long been urban residents of the streets of South-East Asia. Their notorious reputation for stealing objects and food from unsuspecting visitors has reached the world around. Are they in the end viscious little gangs terrorising tourists or vulnerable animals trying to adapt to an environmental crisis where their natural habitat is replaced with concrete. Either perspective brings on the challenge of both human and animal safety along with the imperative question of what is the best foot forward on the subject of mankind and wildlife co-habitation. Luckily, on this occacion, the macaque had not stolen the orange from a now hungry tourist but was offered the fruit with kindness. Once retreated to a more secluded part of the area, he can enjoy his treat in peace.
