16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Vastness

As I stood at a busy vantage point over Peyto Lake, I wished for a time when you could be in this spot alone. I fixed my eyes into the valley and tuned my ears from the chatter of the crowd of tourists taking selfies to the wind through the trees and imagined solitude in such vastness. How small I felt. There's beauty in realizing you are small and the world lives on for others to see regardless of your presence, life, or awareness. It also fascinates me to think how different it may look a few generations from now. What did it look like 100 years ago, before the parking lot?
