I was trying to portray the passage of time with the combination of the following elements: the unkempt section of old gravestones in West Cemetery in Amherst, MA (the same cemetery where Emily Dickinson is buried); the flag on the lone veteran's grave; the brown grass as the end of the year approaches; and the low angle of the autumn sun.
