Immigrants that were sick when they arrived at Ellis Island were quarantined to the Ellis Island Hospital. Some recovered and were allowed in to the US. Some did not survive. Others were sent back to their places of origin. Can't imagine being so close to the "land of opportunity" as symbolized by the statue of liberty and not being able to complete the journey.
