21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Violet

Portrait of a Rhinopia, a scopenid that lives in the Indo-Pacific seas. In this case the animal has a beautiful purple coat and poses with a curious look at the photographs taken of it. The animal was on a seabed of about 25 meters between dead coral and algae, trying to camouflage itself.
