16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Vulnerable Strength

This photo is a piece from the image series I created entitled "The Evolution of an American Woman." It portrays a woman working in a field in the thirties during the Great Depression. The dirt smeared on my model's face, her clutched hands, sorrowful expression, and exposed knee speak of the immense struggles and vulnerabilities women faced during this time combined with the increased responsibility women had in supporting, as well as uplifting, their families. Wives worked beside their husbands in the fields to make ends meet
