20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Vulture at Manatee Springs

While vacationing in Florida earlier this year, my husband and I visited Manatee Springs State Park in hopes of seeing a Manatee. We were delighted to see an abundance of wildlife up close and personal that had no fear of humans whatsoever! The trees were full of vultures, and you could walk right up to them! The entire boardwalk was like a living nightmare because the trees were full of vultures, snakes, and there were turtles and alligators in the spring and river. There were actually people swimming in the spring with all the creepy inhabitants! We loved it - but at a reasonable distance!
