23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
Watching, waiting, hoping, Caumsett State Park.
The picture shows a great egret in what is called the sand hole, waiting to strike at a meal. These majestic birds can often be seen stalking their prey in the shallow waters of the mud flats, or as in the case, along the edges of the marsh. I was surprised to get even this close, especially with nothing in between. Usually, when you get remotely near them, they take off. During high tide, the water reaches the edge of the marsh grass, and flows into the western end of the marsh by way of what becomes a channel on the left.
