This slit-scan photograph captures the overwhelming presence of the American flag in my new home. The technique stretches moments of time, layering repeated impressions of the flag until it becomes both familiar and disorienting. The image reflects how this symbol is woven into the fabric of everyday life, shaping my perception of this place. Relocating from Hong Kong to the United States last year, I was struck by this cultural saturation. Unlike in my homeland, where national symbols are confined to formal spaces, here the flag pervades daily life—waving from row houses, fluttering in storefronts, and even carried by immigrants. Each iteration invites me to confront questions of belonging: What does “home” mean? The slit-scan technique mirrors my experience of cultural adjustment, where time feels stretched and the familiar becomes strange. Moving to a new country has been a journey of personal renewal, but I arrived with my own perspective and critical thinking. Through this image, I wrestle with the tension between embracing renewal and confronting the weight of inherited ideologies, finding both beauty and unease in this process of transformation.
