Wet-Plate Collodion Photo of A Sign in the West End of Louisville, Kentucky. USA

On a list of 61 cities across the United States, the relatively small city of Louisville, Kentucky ranks number 11 on the number of homicides. Through Oct of 2017, there were over 81 homicides in Louisville. Half of all homicides in Louisville remain unsolved. Most murders in Louisville occur in the predominantly African-American and poor West End. Most victims are young African-American men. This photo shows a location where an African-American woman was shot to death. It is the same spot where some years ago her son was killed by gunfire. The pair of sneakers hanging on the wire are a way of memorializing homicides in this neighborhood.
