22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Whale reverse breaching.
During whale watching season in Hawaii, my camera happened to be pointed in the right direction as the whale did a reverse breach and slammed its tail into the water. The splash was so powerful and it was amazing to witness and photograph.
