14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
"What Lies Below" - The crystal clear waters of Kitchitikipi revealing a limestone rock formation.

Kitchitikipi is the Native American name for Big Springs, Michigan's largest freshwater spring. To enjoy this natural phenomenon, visitors ride on a self-propelled raft. It is located in Palms Brook State Park, operated by the State of Michigan. It is a protected and self-sufficient natural tourist attraction in Michigan's Upper Peninsula with a rich, Native American history. In the 40 years I have been visiting Kitchitikipi, it has remained virtually unchanged.
