Where Bison Were

This is a photo of a fossilized bison femur, dating to around 200,000 years old. I captured it after getting special permission to work on the site at night - photographing the fossil under the light of the full "buck" moon in July. It was uncovered during a paleontology dig at the "Mammoth Graveyard" near Cerney Wick. This excavation is part of a multi year project involving hundreds of paleontologists and volunteers (David Attenborough has visisted the site!) aiming to uncover the secrets of megafuana that were common in the UK throughout the Pleistocene. What make this image particularily powerful, is that bison have recently been reintroduced to the UK through restoration efforts in Kent. This means that for the first time in hundreds of thousands of years - the animal can be found alive in the UK, not just as a fossil.
