White Butterfly Orchid – The rarest of all orchids

It took me several years before I finally found this unique pure white Butterfly Orchid, Anacamptis papilionacea variety albiflora. The common name of this orchid (Butterfly Orchid) is a reference to the beautiful, large, undulated labellum (central petal), which resembles the wings of a butterfly in flight. This species (Anacamptis papilionacea) is exclusively confined to the Iron Gates Natural Park, Southwestern Romania. The Park is characterised by a particular distinct regional Mediterranean climate, significantly milder and far more humid than in the rest of the country, extremely favourable to dozens of orchid species, some restrictive only to this region (Orchids of Romania, by Nora De Angelli & Dan Anghelescu, 2020).
