Rhino poaching is done to meet the high demand for their horns, where the horn is predominantly used in Traditional Medicines but is increasingly being used as a symbol of wealth and prosperity. To combat this, the horns are shaved down at a young age-called dehorning. This is thought to dissuade poachers. This process is similar to cutting one's fingernails and the rhino does not experience any pain. There is no conclusive evidence of side effects to dehorned rhino. Therefore some rhinos will appear to have smooth rather than pointy horns as they grow up. And while the rhinos here are called white- this is due to a translation error -White rhinos are named after the Afrikaans word wyd, which means "wide" and refers to the rhino's wide, square upper lip. Early English explorers mistook the word for "white" and named the species accordingly.
