19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
White Torri gate

I took it at Fushimi Inari Shrine, in Kyoto, Japan, with a converted 720nm infrared camera. The Torii gates were originally red, but 720nm infrared filters out visible light to capture the invisible, so the gates appeared to be white in this photo. The trees were just ordinary green trees, but the chlorophyll in the leaves reflected infrared light. The leaves were pale blue straight from the camera, I swapped the red-blue color channel to make it pink and dreamy instead.
