23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
Why do you cover your mouth with your hand when you laugh?

Money is often an issue. Genetic predispositions, illnesses, accidents, side effects of cancer treatment, and lack of access to dental care are just some of the many reasons why not everyone can have a "perfect smile." And a "perfect smile" has become a symbol of success. A smile increases attractiveness, and people with snow-white teeth are perceived as nicer, more intelligent, and more trustworthy. This makes life easier. The artist asks herself and her audience the titular question: "Why do you cover your mouth with your hand when you laugh?" She searches for the answer together with over 50 people who dared to show their bites. It forces us to reflect on the importance of empathy and to be sensitive to not judging others based on their smile, as it is not a person's calling card. It compels us to smile sincerely, because a lack of funds for treatment or limited access to a dentist are not reasons for embarrassment – people should not be ashamed of what they have no control over.
