19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Wild and Free

Magical. Mysterious. There is something about Icelandic horses that just draws me in. When I travel, I love to photograph things that I do not usually get to experience. So the Icelandic horses were an important piece of my content to photograph while traveling around the island. The Icelandic horses are strong, bold and friendly. They have to withstand all types of weather throughout the year, yet they come to greet you when you arrive. Their long, thick manes are some of the most beautiful I have seen. I had a vision in my head of what I wanted to capture with my camera, and photographing the horses face horozontally perpendicular to the direction of the horses head added visual tension, this helps the viewer focus on what is important in the image. My soul purpose for this image was to focus on the beauty of the eyes and mane of the Icelandic horse.
