13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Wild Mustangs of Corolla, North Carolina, USA

THe Wild Horses of Corolla still survive despite humans encroaching on their space. They live near the ocean on a small northern part of the Outer Banks. People have decided to build large homes in the area that are only accessible by 4WDs -- it's not very hospitable for humans -- but nevertheless -- there are homes. The horses walk through the property and are tolerant of humans invading their territory. Beautiful animals...and luckily there is a non-profit that helps them survive. https://www.corollawildhorses.com/
