23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Drone/Aerial
Wings in the Wind

This photograph was taken from an open-door helicopter above Lake Natron in Kenya, during my first dedicated aerial wildlife shoot in the country. The combination of strong vibration, rolling motion, and fast winds made 3S (Slow Shutter Speed) photography extremely challenging. Using a shutter speed of 1/8 second, I attempted to synchronize my movement with the motion of thousands of flamingos below—capturing their flight as flowing streaks of pink against the dark surface of the lake. The weather was mostly cloudy, but we timed the flight with the pilot so that a brief window of sunlight could illuminate the birds. Out of more than 20,000 frames taken in two days, only a handful of 3S images survived the technical demands. This image represents the rare moment when light, motion, and aerial perspective aligned to reveal the flamingos not as individual birds, but as a single, sweeping gesture across the landscape.
