Women and the Decline of Everyday Cultural Attire

Maharashtra’s traditional garments like the lugada or Nauwari saree, once worn daily, are now reserved for special occasions. The lugada, known for its vibrant colors, is still cherished by older generations, who wear it as a symbol of cultural pride daily and during festivals and ceremonies. However, today’s younger women(most of them) have moved away from wearing the lugada in favor of more modern attire. One of the unique features of the Nauwari saree is the freedom of movement it provides, making it not only elegant but practical. In fact, in the past, figures like Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi were known to fight the British wearing a Nauwari saree, riding a horse with remarkable agility, proving its functional and symbolic strength.”
